Jan entered two songs into the 'Just Sing Florida' competition:-

Florida (Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky) - Original Competition

CD/Jan Hinton

This song was announced at the FMEA conference in Tampa on January 11th 2008 as the winner! Senator Tony Hill and Representative Ed Homan presented a bill before the Florida legislature in an attempt to have the song designated a Florida state song. They were successful. The song bill was passed by a House Committee, a Senate Committee then reached the Senate and House floors respectively. On the Senate floor the bill was passed unanimously. On the House floor it was passed 83 - 31. The bill proposed that "Swanee River" be elevated to the Florida Statute, with altered words, as the Florida State Song. "Florida, Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky" would be placed by its side in the Florida Statute as the Florida State Anthem. Governor Charlie Crist signed the bill into law on June 30th 2008 and from July 1st Jan's song became the official Florida State Anthem. She will meet with Governor Crist on August 12th for a special signing ceremony.
